District Catholic Schools Ongoing Threats Plague School Community

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – The Thunder Bay Police Service remains deeply engaged in collaborative efforts with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board to address a series of threats that have raised safety concerns at four different educational institutions.

On November 21, 2023, at approximately 11:45 a.m., authorities received an anonymous call indicating a threat to Pope John Paul School. Subsequently, an 11-year-old individual was identified as the source of the call. Given the age of the person involved, the school and child services are taking appropriate follow-up actions.

In the evening of November 27, 2023, a threat report concerning St. Patrick’s High School prompted the closure of the school on the following day. School Resource Officers and members of the Community Response & Engagement (CORE) Unit collaborated with school administration to assess and eliminate potential threats. The police continue to work closely with school authorities to analyze the information received, aiming to identify those responsible for the threat that led to the school closure.

On November 27, 2023, officers were summoned to St. Ignatius High School following the discovery of threats written on a wall. Preliminary investigations conducted by Primary Response Officers and subsequent follow-ups by School Resource Officers resulted in the arrest of a young individual. They are now facing charges of Mischief under $5000 and Threats.

On November 29, 2023, School Resource Officers attended Holy Family School to investigate a reported act of mischief involving hateful messages written on a portable door. This incident prompted the school to initiate a hold and secure protocol. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to step forward to help identify and hold accountable those responsible for instilling fear in the young students and staff at this school.
