THUNDER BAY – Local – Looking for something to do in Thunder Bay? The Long Weekend is almost here, and there are many things happening in Thunder Bay.
For Thursday, Act Out! a free social action conference for youth. Act Out! will explore issues related to social justice, youth empowerment, community building, and sustainability. The event will take place on Thursday, April 5th and is hosted by a collaboration of Lakehead University Student Union centres. This social action conference will engage youth in conversations about issues they face everyday – issues of identity, power, and community. A series of workshops will offer youth unique opportunities to network, learn skills, and develop a sense of how to take charge of their communities and effect change.

There will be a three-on-three basketball tournament for youth this weekend at the Dennis Franklin Comarty School. The Basketball Tournament and BBQ to follow are sponsored by the Regional Multicultural Youth Council this Saturday, April 7, 2012, beginning at 3:00PM. Also on this weekend: After an extensive tour of Eastern Canada with stops in in all the major centres between Thunder Bay and Halifax, local solo musician, Jean-Paul De Roover will be coming home to perform at Black Pirates Pub, Friday April 6th. This will be the 23rd and final date of De Roover’s ‘Year of the Loop’ tour. Opening the night will be the 3 piece instrumental group, Don’t You Mean People, solo synth-pop act, Ocean City Defender, and Sioux Lookout solo artist, Nick Sherman. Doors open at 10pm Friday April 6th. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.
Over the long-weekend there will be live music at Crocks on Cumberland. Visit their Facebook page to keep up on the latest.
The Thunder Bay Youth Strategy’s Anti-Discrimination & Racism pillar invites all Youth, ages 13 – 24, to take photographs of what they see in Thunder Bay that shows respect for diversity, and/or what they see in Thunder Bay that shows a lack of respect for diversity. Along with the photo, youth will submit a short explanation of what the photo represents, as well as what people, neighbourhoods, service providers, or the greater community can do to overcome the issue, or get more of the positive actions/behaviours in our community that promote respect for diversity.
The prize for top 2 most meaningful and creative submissions will be glory and praise. The winning teams/individuals will also receive other prize goodies to sweeten the victory.
An event will be held during Youth Week to celebrate the work of youth who participated in the challenge, with selected pictures on display for the community to see. Please stay tuned for more information regarding the event!
