FORT MCLEOD – Crimebeat – Today, the newest of the RCMP’s 111 detachments in Alberta was officially commissioned today in Fort Mcleod, a community served by the mounted police since 1874. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by federal Minister of State (Finance) Ted Menzies, Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security Jonathan Denis, Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Evan Berger and Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, Commanding Officer of “K” Division RCMP.
“Since 1874, the detachment building – in one form or another – has served as a symbol of our strong bond with the citizens of Fort Mcleod,” said Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, Commanding Officer of “K” Division RCMP. “Throughout the years, this community has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to preserving our history here. The commissioning of this new detachment ensures that legacy will live on in Fort Mcleod for years to come.”
The new 6,368 square foot detachment replaces one in use by the RCMP since the late 1950’s, and was designed to meet modern day policing needs. The new building features four holding cells equipped with video surveillance cameras and office space to house the Ranchland Victim Services Unit which serves the Claresholm, Fort Mcleod, Piikani and Pincher Creek RCMP Detachments. Detachment Commander Sgt. Brent Hawker, six RCMP members and two support employees work out of the new detachment.
Funding for the new facility, which cost approximately $2.5 million to build, was provided by the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada under the terms of the Provincial Policing Service Agreement.

As one of our premier Canadian institutions, I know that the RCMP serves this community with dedication and integrity,” said Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews. “This new detachment and the recently signed RCMP contract policing agreements will ensure that the people of Fort Macleod will continue to live, work and raise their families in a safe and secure community for years to come.”
