THUNDER BAY – The message “Kill Indians” which some disturbed person or persons have been spray-painting in Thunder Bay is one that does not reflect the views of our city. It is the act that is both frightening, and disgusting.
The Thunder Bay Police Service report they are looking for public’s assistance in identifying person or persons responsible for incidents of graffiti in the city over the past weekend. The content of the graffiti in these incidents is offensive and disturbing.
A retail sign at the corner of Fort William Road and Main Street had been spray painted with an anti Aboriginal statement. This had occurred sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Three incidents in the Current River area were reported this weekend that have similar messages and a name tag of “The Hesh”. Two of the locations had derogatory remarks about Jesus and a satanic symbol.
These incidents are under investigation by the Community Policing Branch. Anyone with information regarding the identity of those responsible should call Police or Crime Stoppers.
Thunder Bay has a growing community of First Nations peoples from across the north who are choosing to make our city their home. Some are here for secondary education at Lakehead University or Confederation College.
There are some of the First Nations Elders who have moved to Thunder Bay to be with their grandchildren, or for health reasons.
Overall Thunder Bay benefits greatly from the culture, the sense of humour, and spirt of our Aboriginal residents.
Personally, the individual, or individuals if that is the case who are responsible for the disgusting messages, are in my opinion in deep need of help. Overcoming hate and prejudice are critical steps forward in becoming a member of society.
Anyone who would paint such a message of hate obviously needs help in reaching that desired goal.
That of course is just my opinion, as always, your mileage may vary. In this case, I hope it doesn’t.
