Dramatic temperature drop tonight with cold wind chills and possible flash freeze

Weather AlertTHUNDER BAY – Our yo-yo winter is continuing. Tonight, a cold front is pushing southward through Thunder Bay and extends to an area just north of Kapuskasing. Temperatures ahead of the front are just below the freezing mark at minus 1 or minus 2. As the front passes temperatures may drop as quickly as 5 degrees per hour.

Environment Canada reports, “Many regions adjacent to Lake Superior will reach the minus 20 mark by midnight. Winds associated with the cold front will be 20 to 30 kilometres per hour giving wind chill values of minus 25 to 30 by midnight. As temperatures continue to drop across areas north And northeastward of Lake Superior wind chill values will reach Minus 30 to minus 39 overnight. A wind chill warning may be issued If values are expected to reach minus 40 or below.

The cold front will reach Sault Ste Marie later overnight with temperatures continuing to drop through the day on Friday.

A few flurries being reported along the front and some lake enhanced snow will develop east of Lake Superior. This may give hazardous driving conditions due to the rapid freezing of wet flurries which may result in a flash freeze.

A Flash freeze warnings may be issued.

The public are advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
