THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Flooding in Grassy Narrows has brought evacuees from the First Nations community 500 kilometres west of the city into Thunder Bay.
On Monday, the City bagan to receive evacuees from Grassy Narrows.
Due to flooding in the First Nation community, the Province issued a request to Thunder Bay to be a host community.
Thunder Bay will initially host approximately 100 people from Grassy Narrows. Resources are in place to support the well-being of all.
Earlier this month, the City began to host evacuees of Kashechewan First Nation due to flooding in that community. The situation in Kashechewan has since improved and some residents were able to return to their homes over the weekend.
The City’s response is a coordinated effort in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, Department of Indigenous Services Canada, Ontario Health North, and the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Ontario (OFMEM).
Working closely with OFMEM representatives, the City will continue to monitor the situation and planning is ongoing. A full cost recovery agreement is in place between Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and the City.
