Thunder Bay – NEWS – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a FLOOD WARNING UPDATE for the region including The City of Thunder Bay, Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, as well as the Townships of O’Connor, Comnee, Gillies and Dorion.
The LRCA says that, “Area gauges have recorded between 9 to 19 millimetres of precipitation overnight, with two- day totals ranging between 34 to 50 millimetres. Area watercourses that began to rise again overnight have or are beginning to peak this morning. Water levels remain very high, especially on the Kaministiquia River. Prolonged periods of high water are anticipated. Minimal to no rain is forecasted in the next five days”.
Many flooded roads have been reported throughout the LRCA’s area of jurisdiction. The public is advised to adhere to road closures and never drive over flooded roads.
A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
Authority Staff will continue to monitor conditions as part of its flood forecasting and warning program. The public is advised to pay attention to local forecasts, and exercise caution in and around area waterways. High flows and unstable slippery banks could be dangerous. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all waterways and discuss the hazards of cold fast flowing water.
This Flood Warning will remain in effect until 4:00 p.m. Friday May 13, 2022.
