WINDSOR, ON – The Lakehead University women’s basketball team were defeated at the hands of the Windsor Lancers on Friday evening 79-52. Halftime score was 48-28 for the Lancers, who came out of the gate strong to lead 29-11 after ten minutes. They would cruise from there on out, as Lakehead could not get their offense going against the #2 team in the country.
Lakehead was led by Lindsay Druery with 12 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Carolyn Fragale with 10 points. Kelsey Bardsley and Lacey McNulty had 7 points each.
Windsor was led by 2011 CIS player of the year Jessica Clemencon with 17 points and 3 rebounds, although Lakehead did limit her to 6 points and 2 rebounds in the first half. Bojana Kovacevic, Karissa Williams and Miah-Marie Langlois scored 11 points each.
As a team Lakehead shot 33% from the field to Windsor’s 49%. Lakehead did seem to be getting better defense in front of Windsor’s perimeter shooters, who went 3/14 from beyond the arc.
Coach Jon Kreiner said, after the game, “Windsor came at us hard in the first quarter. Their screen action and ball movement was crisp and effective and we didn’t challenge them defensively. We need to get back to playing with grit and compete harder for loose balls, rebounds and win the small battles.”
The two teams rematch tomorrow at 6PM.
