WATERLOO, ON- The Lakehead University Thunderwolves women’s basketball team were defeated Friday, 66-51 by the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Lady T-Wolves record now stands at 6-5 and the team is 2 wins behind Laurier in the OUA West.
The T-Wolves got off to a decent start in the first half, trailing 31-25 after 20 minutes.
The Golden Hawks would impose their will in the final 20, outscoring Lakehead 35-26. Despite shooting a higher percentage from the field (Lakehead 37%, Laurier 33%), Lakehead committed 12 more fouls than Laurier (23-to-11). Laurier would make that count, going 22/26 from the stripe, compared to Lakehead’s 5/7.
Lindsay Druery led Lakehead with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Carolyn Fragale had 11 points with 6 rebounds.
For Laurier, Felicia Mazerolle scored 18 points with 5 rebounds and 4 steals; she was followed by Kimberley Yeldon with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Doreen Bonsu grabbed a game high 11 rebounds with 13 points.
Lakehead coach Jon Kreiner said after the game, “We really got out worked tonight. Laurier is a tough team and really made it tough on us to execute our offense and get locked in on defense. Felicia was great tonight and Doreen really gave us troubles. They just played as a team and executed their game plan better then we did. We need to regroup and find a way to get to the line more and keep our opponents off the line.”
The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 6 pm Eastern.
