SUDBURY – The Lakehead University women’s basketball team was able to earn a road split over the weekend, winning 56-44 against Laurentian, as they move to 4-4 on the season and the Lady Vees slip to 2-6.

The T-Wolves were quick to establish a lead early in the game, and led 32-18 at the break. The Vees made a run in the third quarter, forcing Lakehead into multiple turnovers in the Q (33 total in the game). Laurentian outscored Lakehead 13-12 in each of the final quarters, but could not push themselves over the hump, as Jon Kreiner’s team used ball movement against the Vees’ 2-3 zone, and got some outside shooting prowess from Carolyn Fragale (6-13 from three), who finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds.

Lindsay Druery was her usual double-double self, notching 12 points and 12 boards along with 3 steals. Sierra guy was also big on the boards, grabbing 8 (2 offensive) and got help from Lacey McNulty with 6 rebounds. As a team the Pack out-rebounded the Vees 43-25.

Laurentian’s top scorer was Erin Simpson with 14.

Jon Kreiner’s team is now tied for 4th place with Guelph and McMaster in the OUA West. Post game Kreiner remarked, “We got a much needed win to keep pace in a crazy and wild OUA season. Any team has the ability to win on any night and although we struggled again with turnovers we did enough early to seal the victory. Rebounding and Carolyn’s shooting against Laurentian’s zone were the key to the win.”

The women now break for exams and will play next during the Christmas exhibition schedule.
