Wood WorksKENORA – The City of Kenora’s new Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre has won a Wood Works award in the “Institutional Wood Design Award– Under $10 million” category. The 11th annual awards banquet was held in Ottawa at the Ottawa Convention Centre last night where Mayor Canfield and Facilities Coordinator/Deputy Building Official John Nabb attended to receive the award on behalf of the City. Along with City representatives, MP Greg Rickford and lead architect David Nelson and staff from Nelson Architects were also present for the event.

Wood Works is an initiative of the Canadian Wood Council and promotes the use of wood and wood products in construction projects. The annual Awards Gala recognizes excellence in wood-based construction projects and the organizations that are pioneering and preserving the use of wood.

“We congratulate David Nelson for his Wood Works award. The Discovery Centre, nestled next to Lake of the Woods, is a striking example of how wood from the Kenora area is transformed by an able architect. The Discovery Centre draws people into a space that speaks to our lake, our forests and the richness of our history which reaches back 8,000 years” stated Dennis Wallace, Lake of the Woods Development Commission Chair.

Mayor Canfield was elated to receive the award. “Kenora is on the leading edge of growing Northwestern Ontario and in the many developments that continue to take place in Kenora it is incredible to be recognized for the uniqueness of the creativity of local talent we have here. The design and illustration of our area through our new Discovery Centre is just the beginning of great things to come for Kenora”, stated Mayor Canfield.

The award will be available for viewing at the Discovery Centre on Lakeview Drive.
