Thunder Bay – NEWS – Winter conditions on local roads are the likely cause of an accident this morning.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Platoon Chief John Kaplanis says that “At approximately 09{15hrs this morning, Thunder Bay Fire & Rescue (TBFR) responded to a 911 call of a report for a transport truck driver trapped in his vehicle as a result of hitting a hydro pole on Island Drive.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle incident involving a transport tractor and trailer that had left the roadway and collided with a hydro pole and taking down several utility wires, of which was a severed hydro service line.
Live wires were laying across the trailer portion of the transport truck, with the uninjured driver remaining in the cab of the tractor portion of the truck. The driver was contacted by phone by fire fighters who instructed him to remain in the safety of the vehicle until the live hydro wires could be isolated by Synergy North utility company.
Once the hydro service was isolated, the driver was removed from the vehicle by TBFR.
The scene was inspected by TBFR to ensure the vehicle did not contain hazardous materials and to ensure no leaking fluids or other hazards were present. The driver of the vehicle was transferred to EMS personnel who were standing by on scene to medically assess the driver. The scene was left in the care and control of TBPS who continued with an investigation of the incident.
Thunder Bay and area drivers are reminded to adjust driving speeds and account for braking time as road conditions become slippery as a result of the latest snowfall. Thunder Bay and area drivers are also reminded to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles and personnel who are responding to, or are on the scene of, motor vehicle collisions.
