Thunder Bay – COVID-19 – The COVID-19 shutdown in Ontario includes ski resorts.

The holiday season is one of the busiest times for many resorts, and ski hills, and across Ontario it is putting operators into both frustration and financial concern.

Here in Thunder Bay both Mount Baldy and Loch Lomond will be closed under the provincial order.

In a posting on social media, Mount Baldy states, “There is no sugar coating this one…. Yes this is the exact feeling we had after the news…. After absolutely busting our tails day & night to make this season the best, safest and earliest yet we get yet another Covid blow. To all the Mount Baldy Supporters we cannot thank you enough for all of the support you have given us this year! We promise once we are allowed to open again we will be ready for you with some amazing conditions that will make you smile again.????“We are forced to close during our busiest time Dec 26th and have decided to have our last day on Dec 23rd. Please make sure you come on out and rip some turns and enjoy what we have worked so hard for this year!”

Loch Lomond has posted, “The beginning of our season has seen so many of you visit our hills, and we have been so happy to have provided you with that joy. With the announcement from the provincial government yesterday, our Christmas plans have had to change. As per the provincial mandate, we will not be able to operate after Christmas Day for 2 weeks.

To provide you with as much on-snow time as we can, we have decided to gift our public and adjust our hours. We will open for Christmas Eve (10AM-5PM), and Christmas Day (1PM-4PM).
All special passes (Fridays, Weekdays, and After 5 Passes) will be honoured during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Hours.
Note that we will only be running necessary services during those hours. If you have not picked up your season pass yet, you will not be able to on those days, but you can get a member pass at the outdoor ticket office. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday break, and we will be back and operating as soon as we are able.”
Resorts in Alberta, Lake Louise, Nakiska and Sunshine Village are open. There have been COVID-19 outbreaks at Lake Louise and Nakiska.
Alberta has chosen however to allow ski resorts to remain open.
Sunshine Village has put restrictions on the number of skiers, and instituted an afternoon lift pass because the afternoons are quieter at the resort. Getting up to Sunshine Village means a Gondola ride that usually can accommodate six skiers.
The two ski hills in Thunder Bay are saying they will close.
