THUNDER BAY – Wildfires are ramping up again in the Northwest District. There were four new fires reported on July 30, 2020. Currently, there are 15 active fires across Western Ontario. Three of those are not under control.
The fire danger is rated from moderate to high across the region.

Northwest Region
- There were four new forest fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the mid-afternoon of July 30.
- Sioux Lookout 40 is not under control at 4 hectares and is located approximately 25 kilometres north of Wunnumin Lake First Nation.
- Dryden 24 is being held at 0.1 hectares and is located near Pyatt Lake, approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Dryden
- Sioux Lookout 41 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and is located near Swan Lake, approximately 38 kilometres north of Bearskin Lake First Nation.
- Fort Frances 35 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and is located near Dunnet Lake, approximately 26 kilometres northeast of Atikokan.
- There are currently 15 active forest fires in the Northwest Region. Three are not under control, four are being held, three are under control, and five are being observed.
- The forest fire hazard is mainly moderate to high with pockets of low hazard scattered across the region.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario’s outdoor burning regulations.
Fires are to be ignited no sooner than 2 hours before sunset and extinguished no later than 2 hours after sunrise.
Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site.
