THUNDER BAY – Minister of Health and Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu joins NNL for our weekly update on what is happening with regard to COVID-19 and issues in the Thunder Bay-Superior North riding and across Western Ontario.

The Minister says, “It’s been a tough time for Canadians over the past several months. But as we work through this global health crisis together, it’s been obvious that the care and kindness we are showing each other is making a difference. It’s also why our Liberal government is investing in families, children, seniors, and working Canadians across the country. Supporting families and businesses in this difficult time is the best investment we can make to support the Canadian economy.

“The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) helps parents with the cost of raising their children. Since 2015, it has put more money in the pockets of Canadian families and lifted 334,000 children out of poverty. And during COVID-19, the benefit is more generous to reflect the additional expenses that families are managing.

“In May, as part of the economic response to COVID-19, the CCB gave an extra $300 per child to families. Now, in the new normal, we’re increasing the maximum support that parents will receive to $6,765 for kids under 6, and $5,708 to kids age 6-17.

“This money will help parents with the cost of food, transportation, college savings, and nurturing their children’s passions and interests. We’re choosing to invest in our kids today, so the next generation of Canadians have a fair chance to succeed.
