THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead women’s basketball squad took to the floor versus the Winnipeg Wesmen again Saturday night, although the final result was no different than Friday’s game. Final score was LU 67, Winnipeg 74.
Although showing signs of greatness late in the game, Lakehead was unable to string together a solid quarter of basketball as turnovers and poor defense allowed Winnipeg to control the pace of the game. Strangely, Lakehead’s better runs happened with predominantly bench players on the floor, perhaps suggesting that Jon Kreiner’s bench could be deeper than originally thought.
The Thunderwolves were led by Kelsey Bardley with 14 points, hitting 4 of 6 from behind the arc. Katie Ulakovic 12 points, Carolyn Fragale 10, while post Lindsay Druery pulled down 10 rebounds.
Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 22 points and 6 rebounds, Danielle Baryl had 13 points, and Stephanie Kleysen had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
Coach Jon Kreiner stated, “Tonight we really struggled to take care of the ball. Our game IQ was low in the first half but I thought we really battled hard and were much smarter in the 2nd half. We definitely need to get Lindsay more touches. She was 4-8 and had only 4 post touches in the 2nd half of the game. I thought Kelsey Bardsley really stepped up off the bench and played a great game. Lindsay Inkila and Erika French did some good things off the bench as well. The first game was a tough one for our backcourt but Katie and Carolyn also played better, especially in the 2nd half”.
