Constance Lake declares State of Emergency over COVID-19

CONSTANCE LAKE FN – Indigenous communities across Northern Ontario have been concerned over how to deal with the threat of COVID-19.

Constance Lake First Nation has declared a state of emergency as the community doess not have the needed supplies to deal with the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Chief and Council are taking pro-active steps to assure community safety.

A State of Emergency is hereby declared in Constance Lake First Nation, ON, CANADA.

Effective at 1:00 p.m. on March 17, 2020. This State of Emergency has been declared due to COVID-19 Global Pandemic and due to insufficient medical emergency response services such medical staff such as doctors and nursing, medical supplies, COVID-19 testing kits/facilities, personal protective equipment and capacity, lack of food, supplies to work through the COVID- 19 Global Pandemic. This situation threatens the public safety. This State of Emergency will remain in effect until April 3, 2020, or until rescinded by subsequent order;

As the Chief and Council of Constance Lake First Nation, we exercise the authority to preserve the public safety and hereby render all required and available assistance vital to the security, well-being, and health of Constance Lake First Nation community members.

We hereby direct all community members and departments of Constance Lake First Nation to take the steps necessary to protect life and property, public infrastructure and provide such emergency response deemed necessary.

These include, but not limited to:

  1. No gatherings of more than 50 people, this includes places of worship and/or
  2. SELF-ISOLATION/STAYING HOME. Leave home only for basic essential needs such as grocery shopping, medical appointments, medical emergencies and
  3. The local restaurant will be limited to take-out only, until further
  4. All residents who left the community to the affected locations after March 13, 2020, must self-isolate for 14 days from the time they returned back, prior to having contact with others.
  5. Out-of-town-visitors/non-residents are discouraged from visiting the community unless it is an
  6. Non-residents that work in our community will be allowed at this time to do their work until further
