OTTAWA – Andrew Scheer has announced his intention to resign as Conservative leader. The decision comes after a disappointing election loss.
The Conservative leader was facing a party leadership review after the election loss.
“This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. I have announced my intention to step down as the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada once a new Leader is elected. I am putting my party first and my family first,” said Scheer, standing in the House of Commons on a Statement of Privilege.
Over recent weeks Scheer has been seeing a growing number of internal party divisions over his leadership.
Andrew Scheer called a special caucus meeting Thursday morning where he announced to Conservative MPs that he was stepping down.
The decision following a report brought down by former Conservative cabinet minister John Baird that sources say is very critical of the Scheer election campaign.
There are also reports from inside sources in the Conservative Party that “His resignation comes as a direct result of new revelations that he was using Conservative Party money to pay for his children’s private schooling.”
Sources are stating that those expenditures were made without the knowledge or approval of the Conservative fund board, including the chair of the board. This has led to calls for the party president to resign over the schooling expenses.”
