THUNDER BAY – CIVIC – It is highly unlikely there will be a rebuild of Dease Pool as I’ve outlined in many previous posts on my social media page. But the conversations have got me thinking.
This area needs a COMMUNITY CENTRE.
Hear me out… There are so many quality programs being offered by a diversity of organizations, the Indigenous Friendship Centre, RMYC, Evergreen, Our Kid’s Count, ProKids, Boy’s & Girl’s Club, 55 Plus Centre, etc. The problem, no venue in the south core. As our community ages and the kids search for more pro-social activities the utility of a neighbourhood community centre becomes more and more pronounced.
A centre can be utilized by every single demographic, socioeconomic & age. A facility of this type could offer, seniors activities, cooking classes, cultural programs and also be utilized as storage for equipment used in Dease Park programming.
Given the potential demolition of Victoriaville, a social venue in the area could help bring comfort and assistance to people that need it most.
I think it’s something worth exploring and will be tabling an exploration of this idea during Monday’s discussion on future uses of the pool site. A community centre would very much compliment Dease Park in giving a good quality of life to area residents.
The one consideration that could be an issue, is parking, of course. That said, please consider this idea and offer thoughts.
A community centre could provide a host of activities 12 months a year. The cost would be approx 2-2.5 million.
