Weather – Extreme Cold Grips Far North Ontario

THUNDER BAY – The Arctic cold is extending its grip on Northern Ontario, extending southward from Monday. Much of the North is under Extreme Cold Warnings.

For the City of Thunder Bay this morning at 05:50 EST it is -22c. Environment Canada says to expect a mix of sun and cloud today. We can expect winds of up to 15 km/h. Tuesday’s high will be minus 18. The wind chill will be minus 31 this morning and minus 23 this afternoon. There is a risk of frostbite, so bundle up.

Fort Severn, Peawanuk, Webequie, Sachigo Lake, Kasabonika, all remain under Extreme Cold Warnings issued by Environment Canada. Temperatures with the windchill are expected this morning to be -45c or colder.

For Tuesday, the Arctic Chill has continued south and Extreme Cold Warnings are now in effect for Red Lake, Ear Falls, Perreault Falls, Pikangikum, Poplar Hill, MacDowell, Sandy Lake, Weagamow Lake, Deer Lake, Savant Lake, Sturgeon Lake, Sioux Lookout, Eastern Lac Seul, Armstrong, Auden, and Wabakimi Park.

Cold wind chills near minus 40 are expected for those areas of the province this morning under clear skies. There is the potential for cold wind chills again tonight.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

As of 5:50 am EST there is no word on school bus cancellations in Red Lake, Ear Falls, Sioux Lookout or other areas. Stay tuned for any updates.
