Annual Teddy Bear Toss Sees Wolves Down Hawks
THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Daniel Del Paggio ended a scoring drought with a natural hat-trick to lead the Lakehead University Thunderwolves to a 3-2 lead over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks.
Through the first half of the opening period the game was end-to-end with almost non-stop action.
Laurier got on the board with 9:38 left to take a 1-0 lead.
#6 Jacob Hetherington for Laurier was sent to the penalty box for boarding putting the Wolves on the powerplay. While the Wolves had a few chances, they failed to put the puck into the twine.
The dry-spell for Del Paggio started in October. #10 ended that drought with a shot that made it past the Laurier goaltender with one minute left in the first period also brought a snowstorm of teddy bears to the Garden’s ice. The goal came on a Wolves power-play.
In the second frame, Dal Paggio got his second goal also on the powerplay.
At 4:24 in the third Del Paggio put the puck for a natural hat trick behind Matt Williams to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.
#19 Neil Aird for Laurier tightened the game with 7:41 left with a goal that left the Wolves diving to try too hold the puck out of the net.
The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team were in 6th place heading into this weekend’s two game series against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
The teams take to the ice at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night for a re-match starting at 7:00 PM.
