THUNDER BAY – Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, visited Lakehead University on behalf of Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, to announce $515,535 in new provincial funding for a local research project.
“Our government is proud to support students and researchers who are creating the new technologies of the future right here in Northern Ontario,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Indigenous Affairs. “This investment in the high-quality research happening at Lakehead University is another signal that Northern Ontario is open for business, and open for jobs.”
The research that Dr. Pedram Fatehi does at Lakehead University will receive a positive boost from this investment of $500k from Ontario, along with federal funds toward the purchase of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer. In the video, Dr. Fatehi explains how this will assist and what the research he is doing will have a positive impact on the forestry, mining sectors, as well as the environmental benefits.
Provincewide, Ontario is investing $41 million in 174 research projects through three separate funding programs. Ontario’s investments are helping newly appointed researchers build their teams, making sure colleges and universities have up-to-date labs and equipment and supporting key projects in the field of genomics.
“Lakehead University greatly appreciates the financial support from the Government of Ontario that will ensure researchers have access to superior resources and infrastructure, including a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer,” said Dr. Moira McPherson, President and Vice-Chancellor, Lakehead University. “This funding will also serve to further strengthen and enhance the research and scholarly activities Lakehead’s students and faculty conduct in partnership with, and to the benefit of, industry and communities.”
