THUNDER BAY – Stunt driving puts people at risk. There are serious penalties for drivers for traveling at rates of speed nearing double the posted speed limit.
On Saturday, an officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Traffic Unit was in the area of May Street South near Southern Avenue when he observed a Jeep being driven southbound on May Street at a high rate of speed around 8:15 am.
The officer was able to determine the driver was travelling at 108 km well past the maximum speed limit posted on May Street of 50 km/h.
The officer attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver of the Jeep complied without incident.
The driver, a 27-year-old Thunder Bay man as a result of that traffic stop has had his driver’s licence suspended and his vehicle impounded for seven days as per Ontario’s stunt driving regulations.
He was also issued a speeding ticket for travelling 108 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone.
The driver’s vehicle was towed from the scene and he is expected to appear in court in December.
