THUNDER BAY – POLITICS – The campaign is now officially on. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Governor-General this morning and the campaign is on. Election day will be October 21st.

Thunder Bay-Superior North MP and Liberal candidate Patty Hajdu states, “Over the past four years, we have accomplished a lot – like more jobs, more affordable housing, a stronger Canada Pension Plan, and a real plan to fight climate change. Canadians have an important choice to make in October; continuing our work together to build a strong middle class or face cuts to the supports they need to ensure everyone has a fair to succeed. The Liberal Party is the only party with a real plan for the economy, the environment, and the middle class. Over the next 40 days, I look forward to continuing to engage with the people of Thunder Bay-Superior North to keep building on the progress we’ve made together.”

Conservative candidate Frank Pullia says, “The Liberals say that they stand on their record but our citizens in the Thunder Bay-Superior North region are paying more taxes than ever and having a hard time making ends meet, especially now that the carbon tax is increasing the cost of living”.

“The Northwestern Ontario region has declining employment while the rest of the province is experiencing growth and prosperity. Our own Minister of Employment did nothing but allowed a $1B Via Rail Contract to go to Siemens in California that would have kept our local Bombardier plant working for years.”

“What we are hearing at the door is that people are disappointed in the Trudeau Liberals and are looking for real change,” adds Pullia.

Green Party candidate and former MP Bruce Hyer shares, “Well thank goodness that I just returned from my week in the wilds of Wabakimi with my family clearing trails on a canoe route that I made decades ago. We enjoyed paddling, remoteness, walleye dinners, wildlife, campfires, guitar sing-alongs, and camaraderie. We got back just in time for the writ drop. We are ready. In a day or two, our Green Campaign Office for Amanda Moddejonge and me will be up and running in a great spot at 184 Camelot and Water Street just across from Marina Park. Donations are rolling in, and volunteers are volunteering! We even have a nearby coffee shop and pub with good food. A great campaign manager in Thomas Denault! Feel free to message me on FB with questions, donations, sign requests, volunteer opportunities! Or my email is Bruce.Hyer@Greenparty.ca.

“Be sure to include your address and phone number to call you back? I am looking forward to a Liberal minority government with lots of NDP and Green MPs keeping Trudeau honest and on track. Thunder Bay could end up holding the balance of power! The Greens are polling second place here. The NDP #3. The Conservatives are polling 4th… and have not won here in 89 years! So nobody has to worry about voting strategically here. Thunder Bay progressive voters who want a change can vote here with their hearts and heads for the NDP or Green candidate who they feel will best represent your interests. I am looking forward to lively discussions and debates!”

NDP candidate Anna Betty Achneepineskum for Thunder Bay-Superior North states, “I am proud to be the NDP candidate for Thunder Bay-Superior North to become your next Member of Parliament.

During my years in politics, I had the opportunity to learn and gain insight on navigating and working with all levels of government.  I also became aware of and addressed the gaps that exist, especially when it comes to our North.

I have been visiting many communities in the riding and heard what people have to say. I plan to continue connecting with people and ensuring that they have the information they need to make an informed vote in this election.

People in Thunder Bay, and across Northern Ontario need someone on their side to make life more affordable, to tackle the housing crisis and to deliver on mental health services.

The NDP has a strong track record of working and standing up for Northern Ontario. We are proposing a New Deal for People that will work to make life more affordable for Northerners.

The Trudeau Liberals have failed to fulfill their mandate on Reconciliation and they failed to deliver on their promises.

People are not getting the health services they need, they can’t find a safe and affordable place to call home and those suffering from addictions can’t get the help they need.

We can do better. We must do better. New Democrats propose a New Deal for People that will address the housing crisis and ensure everyone has access to the health services they need.”

Thunder Bay-Rainy River

Thunder Bay-Rainy River Liberal candidate Dr. Marcus Powlowski says, “The dropping of the writ today is an important part of the election process. It means that it now becomes legal for candidates to begin their advertising campaigns. I’m looking forward to voters being able to begin to assess the platforms and promises of the parties. I’m confident that once people get a chance to come to know me better that the momentum created by the Liberal party over the last four years will continue through to Election Day on October 21st”.

Incumbent Liberal MP Don Rusnak choose not to seek re-election.

Yuk-Sem Won the New Democrat in Thunder Bay-Rainy River says, “We’ve been working hard all summer out in communities across the region meeting with people, hearing their concerns and how essential it is we have a strong voice in the northwest to advocate for the needs of the north.  We are very excited to continue on this work out of our new campaign office. We are working hard to ensure that Northwestern Ontario’s voice is heard in Parliament in ways we expect, and we deserve.  I’m excited to continue the legacy of the NDP in Thunder Bay-Rainy River,” said Won.

Amanda Maddejonge, the Green Party candidate says, “I feel it is absolutely abhorrent that the government chose the day of September 11, which was such a tragedy of global proportions to make an important public announcement – As the prime minister had full discretion to call it as he saw fit today was inappropriate.
The Green Party of Canada is committed to tackling the issues of our generation head-on. We are the only party committed to working cooperatively, across all party lines to deal not only with climate change and diversity but also on issues like education and sustainable employment.
In Thunder Bay we have an incredible grassroots campaign with strong community support. As a military veteran, I have a lifelong commitment to this country.  I am excited to be seeking my election alongside Bruce Hyer’s re-election.
