KENORA – Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding) released the following statement on Labour Day:

“Every Northerner and Canadian deserves a safe, equitable place to work. Labour Day is a celebration of the many accomplishments we have made, including fair wages, protections, and benefits.

“As a former Chairman of the United Transportation Union Local 431, and Vice-General Chairman of CP Lines West, I strongly believe that we must take a moment to thank those who sacrificed a great deal to ensure that workers, both unionized or not, now have the necessary protections enshrined under the law to combat unfair labour practices.

“Since 2015, the federal government has invested in unions to help them purchase the most up-to-date equipment to train apprentices through the Union Training and Innovation Program. We also invested in projects to help break down barriers for women, people with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, and newcomers who want to get into the trades.

“Unions are essential and provide stable good quality jobs for Canadians, which is why the federal government has taken the necessary steps to strengthen and grow the labour movement in the North and across the country. The labour movement in Canada has been the driving force behind exceptional progress for all workers, and we know that organized labour has help shape our country. Safety on worksites and stable retirement for workers are just some of examples of the progress made by organized labour.

“Without the strength and dedication of those who fought to ensure workers are treated fairly, Canada would not be what it is today.”
