THUNDER BAY – Candidate’s Ledger – As I talk to people across Thunder Bay-Rainy River, I know that I am new to their doors and minds as a candidate for the federal election. I grew up seeing the NDP leaders of our region work hard and get results for all of us. A few greats come to mind:

John Rafferty was an authentic, dedicated MP. He was always in touch with the people and communities he served. He fulfilled his role with integrity and real representation, ensuring our communities were not lost in the hoopla of bigger centres.

Howard Hampton was a Provincial leader who took the province by storm. Howie showed that he could bring people together and create momentum and action for the North. His dedication to listening and engaging people is so evident when I talk with folks.

Now, Judith Monteith-Farrell is representing us as an NDP MPP and standing strong for us in a time of Conservative insanity. Her perseverance and advocacy for individuals and communities has been a voice of reason and caring as cuts rampage through the province.

I have always known that the NDP candidates and elected officials represented the hard-working people of the area. They engaged in conversations and pushed hard when it counted for us. I looked to them to find the expectations for myself. I know I can continue these legacies built on community engagement and advocating for the people.

I know I can be the next representative who will make a difference and serve with integrity and heart. I care about the people and communities, big and small. I work hard to ensure I am knowledgeable about the issues and challenges while recognizing that my role is to listen to those who live with them and be able to bring forward their voices through mine.

An MP is not about glitz, glamour and show. It is about grit, hard work and caring. That, I have shown in all my work as an educator, activist and leader. I am ready to bring it all to this new role and be able to continue the work that the NDP has done here. I am truly humbled to be walking in the footsteps of the greats and am ready to take on the next leg of the journey.

I hope you will walk with me.
