PIKANGIKUM – Leadership in Pikangikum have provided an update at 20:45 EDT on Saturday, July 6, 2019.

They report, “Winds are currently blowing smoke heavily into the community making it difficult for planes to land for evacuations. There will be another attempt TOMORROW (JULY 7) to bring another aircraft for further evacuations of vulnerable people from the community.

“BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE IF THIS HAPPENS. These individuals include those with respiratory problems, pregnant women and elderly individuals. Only immediate family will be allowed to travel with the vulnerable people being evacuated. Extended families will NOT be allowed at this time. You will be required to register at Pikangikum High School.

A flight schedule for the remainder of the community will be posted.

Leadership advises: “DO NOT TRY AND SELF-EVACUATE. Do NOT try to go to Taxi Bay. It is not safe to do so. You will have trouble with breathing and visibility. STAY IN YOUR HOMES or stay in one place.”
