Snow Swirls and Blowing Winds Dominate the Day

Sault Ste. Marie is waking up to a full-on April mood swing this morning—somewhere between winter’s stubborn farewell and spring’s hesitant hello. At 6:00 AM EDT, temperatures are just above freezing at 0.4°C, but with a strong northwest wind gusting up to 50 km/h (and expected to peak at 70 km/h later), it feels far colder. In fact, the wind chill sits around -9°C this morning, so don’t let that “above zero” reading fool you.

Light snow is falling across the area, with local accumulations between 2 to 4 cm expected through the morning. Visibility holds at a decent 16 km, though local blowing snow could make things feel a little more like a snow globe than a city by the lake. The barometric pressure is at 99.8 kPa and rising, a sign that this brief stormy stretch is on its way out. Humidity is high at 93%, adding that extra damp bite to the breeze. Today’s high will struggle to reach +1°C, and the UV index is a low 1—not much sun getting through just yet.

Tonight – Windy and Cold with Late-Night Clearing

Tonight brings mainly cloudy skies with a 40 percent chance of lingering flurries early in the evening. But relief is on the way as skies are expected to clear before morning. The wind remains a howling presence—northwest at 40 km/h and gusting to 70—so secure your recycling bins and anything else that might take flight. The overnight low will dip to -4°C, with a biting wind chill making it feel more like -12°C. It’ll be a noisy, nippy night for sure.

A Brighter Midweek – Sunshine and Double-Digit Hopes

Wednesday offers a welcome shift with clear skies and a high of +4°C. Winds calm down a bit but still gust to 40 km/h from the northwest. The morning will feel frigid, with a wind chill near -10°C, but the sun (and a UV index of 5) will give us that rare April-in-Sault serotonin boost.

Wednesday night stays clear and dry with a low of -4°C. By Thursday, full sun is on the menu again and temperatures jump to a lovely high of 11°C—yes, finally! But the weather gives us another twist Thursday night with periods of rain arriving and a low of 6°C.

Friday continues the wet trend, bringing rain throughout the day and another mild high of 11°C. But come nightfall, the temperature slips to zero and brings with it a 60 percent chance of rain showers or flurries—because of course it does.

Saturday continues the pattern with a mix of sun and cloud, a 30 percent chance of flurries, and a daytime high near 6°C. The night cools down again to -3°C with clearing skies likely.

What to Wear?

Today’s look: full winter armour. A windproof coat, warm boots, gloves, and a toque are absolutely necessary, especially with the wind gusts. Later this week, you can trade out the heavy coat for a spring jacket, but keep it close—it’s April in the Soo, after all.

Soo-Worthy Weather Trivia

On April 15th, Sault Ste. Marie has been all over the map. The warmest ever recorded on this day was a balmy 23.9°C back in 2002—a true short-sleeve, “maybe open the cottage” kind of day. Meanwhile, the coldest on record goes all the way down to -12.8°C, set in 1973. Today’s snow and cold sit somewhere in the middle of that weather legacy—classic Soo style!
