Snowfall Warning Issued as Late Winter Storm Sweeps Through the Region
The snow globe has been shaken once again across northern Ontario, and this time it’s serious. A Snowfall Warning is now in effect for Fort Hope, Lansdowne House, and Ogoki, with Environment Canada forecasting 15 to 25 cm of snow before this slow-moving system finally lets up late Tuesday morning.
Communities in the warning zone should prepare for heavy snowfall, reduced visibility, and the added twist of a freezing rain risk, especially closer to Ogoki Post. It’s the kind of day where the snow seems to fall sideways, and your windshield wipers give up out of spite.
Today’s Forecast: A Wintry Cocktail of Snow and Ice
Snow has begun in the west of the region, particularly around Ogoki Post, and is already accumulating. Expect peak snowfall rates of 2 to 3 cm per hour, enough to quickly coat roads and make for tricky travel. In areas east of Ogoki, including Fort Hope and Lansdowne House, rain this morning will transition to snow this afternoon as colder air wraps around the system.
Visibility will drop sharply at times in the heaviest snow, especially along the axis from Armstrong to James Bay. Slippery roads, snow-packed walkways, and the occasional ice patch are all part of today’s forecast fun.
As of early morning, winds are generally from the north-northeast at 20 to 30 km/h, with gusts picking up into the afternoon. Humidity is sitting high at 93%, and the barometric pressure is 100.3 kPa and falling, indicating the system is deepening.
Tonight into Tuesday: Snow Continues, But Tapering Late
Snow and risk of freezing rain continue into the night, particularly across Ogoki and Lansdowne House. Temperatures will hover around freezing or dip slightly below, making conditions icy by morning. Expect the snow to ease by late Tuesday morning, leaving behind quite the snowpack for mid-April.
Historic Weather Snapshot: April 14
While spring is technically here, Mother Nature disagrees. Historical records for the region on April 14 show past extremes ranging from mild 13°C highs to frigid –20°C lows. Today falls squarely in the “Winter Won’t Quit” category.
Wardrobe Wisdom: Northern Edition
Bundle up and break out the snow gear—yes, again. Waterproof boots, thick mitts, and a parka with a hood are non-negotiables. If you’re venturing out, maybe throw in a sled or snowshoes, just in case.
Did You Know?
Ogoki and Lansdowne House sit within a corridor that frequently sees late-season snow thanks to their proximity to Hudson Bay and prevailing Arctic air flows. These regions often get caught in a springtime tug-of-war between warm southern systems and cold northern air masses—a recipe for snow, sleet, and weather-induced grumbling.
