Gunfire Report on Lincoln Street Highlights Growing Firearm Concerns in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to a report of gunfire early Saturday morning in the 1000 block of Lincoln Street, marking yet another incident that underscores rising concerns about firearms in the community.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on April 12, TBPS Primary Response Branch officers were dispatched to the area following reports of a firearm being discharged. Officers quickly secured the scene, and no injuries were reported.

A police presence remains in the area as the TBPS Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Unit continue to investigate the incident. Residents may notice ongoing activity as investigators work to determine what took place and whether any charges will be laid.

This incident comes as Thunder Bay Police sound the alarm on the increasing prevalence of firearms in the city. In a statement shared on social media, TBPS noted that 267 authentic firearms have been seized so far in 2024 — a stark rise from 139 in 2023.

“Given the increase in prevalence of firearms and their involvement in the commission of violent crime over recent years,” TBPS stated, “when officers respond to situations where a potential firearm may be present, they must assume that the weapon is real and accessible until proven otherwise.”

The growing number of firearms on Thunder Bay’s streets is a concern for both public safety and police operations, as officers must approach every such call with heightened caution.
