Frigid Start with Frostbite Warnings—Warmer, Brighter Days Are on the Horizon

Clear Skies, Cold Mornings, and Slowly Emerging Signs of Spring in the North

Geraldton & Greenstone, ON – Tuesday, April 8, 2025 – If you needed a reminder that spring doesn’t come easy in Northern Ontario, this morning delivered it in all its frostbitten glory. As of 6:00 AM EDT, Geraldton Airport is reporting a bitter -22.5°C under clear skies. With the calm air and high humidity at 79%, it’s the kind of cold that clings to your eyelashes. While winds are calm for now, the wind chill earlier this morning registered a bone-numbing -28°C—definitely a “don’t leave skin exposed” kind of situation. The barometric pressure is holding steady at 102.3 kPa.

Today’s forecast offers sunshine and blue skies, but not a whole lot of warmth. Winds from the north will pick up to 20 km/h before tapering off late this morning. The high will crawl to -3°C, but the wind chill will keep it feeling closer to -7°C this afternoon. A moderate UV index of 3 means the sun has some strength, so don’t skip the sunglasses, even if it’s sub-zero.

Tonight stays clear with winds easing to 15 km/h and temperatures plunging back down to -16°C. Evening wind chills will hover near -8°C, but by overnight it’ll feel more like -22°C—another night for warm blankets and good insulation.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, April 9, the sun sticks around and brings a bit of a reprieve. The morning will still be harsh, with wind chills at -22°C, but the high is expected to reach a very welcome +2°C. Wednesday night remains clear, and the low will fall to -12°C.

Thursday continues the sunny streak and edges even warmer, with a high of +5°C and a low of -9°C. It’s not quite t-shirt weather, but certainly heading in the right direction.

Friday brings a mix of sun and cloud along with a 30% chance of flurries or rain showers. The high climbs to 7°C—our warmest of the week so far. Overnight, that slight chance of flurries or light rain lingers with a low of -5°C.

Saturday continues this gentle spring trend with a high of 9°C and a mix of sun and cloud. Another chance of scattered flurries or rain showers appears in the evening, but the nighttime low will only drop to -2°C—downright balmy compared to Tuesday’s early hours!

What to Wear:

This morning is full-on winter survival mode—heavy parka, thermal layers, mitts, hat, scarf, and snow boots. As the week progresses, you can ease into lighter winter jackets, but keep the layers on standby—especially for the chilly evenings. Sunglasses are a must on these brilliantly clear days.

On This Day in Weather History:

Geraldton’s historical high for April 8 is a surprisingly toasty 16.0°C, while the record low stands at a teeth-chattering -29.4°C. Today’s frigid start doesn’t quite break records—but it’s not far off either!

Weather Trivia Time!

Did you know? Geraldton sits along the 49th parallel, yet experiences a colder climate than many cities much farther north. That’s thanks to its interior location and lack of moderating bodies of water—just one of the quirky factors that make Greenstone’s weather uniquely extreme.
