A Breezy Morning with a Chilly Chill

Sault Ste. Marie, ON – Sunday, April 6, 2025 – The Soo is waking up under partly cloudy skies and a not-so-warm -2.3°C this morning. With humidity at a high 86% and a dew point of -4.3°C, the air feels moist but brisk. A west wind at 14 km/h is enough to deliver a wind chill of -7—and earlier this morning, it felt closer to -14. So if you stepped outside and your face protested, you’re not alone. Visibility is wide open at 24 km, and the barometric pressure sits at 101.9 kPa, though it’s starting to fall, signaling changes ahead.

Sunshine Now, But Snow is Sneaking In

Today’s forecast brings a bit of a weather teaser. We’ll get some sunshine to start the day, though by noon it’ll shift to a mix of sun and cloud. Winds will swing in from the southwest at 20 km/h, and our high temperature will rise to a modest +4°C—just enough to remind us spring exists, somewhere. The UV index will reach 5, which is considered moderate, so those sunny spells are worth protecting your skin from, even if you’re still zipped up in your winter jacket.

By tonight, the cloud cover thickens, and periods of snow are expected to begin. Expect 2 to 4 cm of the white stuff, as the southwest wind continues at 20 km/h before becoming light later in the evening. Overnight, the temperature will fall to -3°C, with a wind chill of -10—perfect for snow to stick and remind us that winter isn’t ready to give up the stage just yet.

Monday: Snowy Morning, Blustery Afternoon

Monday brings more snow to the Soo, with another 2 cm expected to fall before tapering off in the afternoon. Skies will remain cloudy afterward. A strong north wind will take over at 30 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h, and will make its presence felt with a sharp morning wind chill of -14. Temperatures will dip to -6°C in the morning before gradually climbing, though the wind will keep things feeling wintry.

By Monday night, expect cloudy periods and a 30% chance of flurries, with temperatures bottoming out at -10°C. Definitely not shorts weather—unless you’re a bold northerner with a high snow tolerance.

Tuesday and Midweek: A Cold Pause, Then a Gentle Thaw

Tuesday will feature a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -2°C. While it’s chilly, there’s hope in those clearer skies. The temperature again falls to -10°C Tuesday night, so we’re still stuck in the deep freeze overnight.

By Wednesday, Sault Ste. Marie should finally crack the positive side of the thermometer again with a high of +4°C and continued mixed skies. Wednesday night will cool down to -4°C, but hey—baby steps toward spring.

Historical Weather Highs and Lows

Historically, April 6 in Sault Ste. Marie has seen temperatures soar to a toasty 20.0°C in 1955, proving that warmth can happen in April. On the flip side, the coldest April 6 recorded here was a frosty -19.4°C back in 1972. Today’s weather is safely between those extremes but still leans toward team winter.

What to Wear in the Soo Today

Layer up and dress smart. A winter coat, scarf, gloves, and a hat are musts this morning, especially with that sneaky wind chill. Sunglasses are a good call for the sunny start, and by tonight, have your boots ready for the fresh snow.
