THUNDER BAY – NEWS – The Winter Storm Warning for Thunder Bay has officially ended, but the cleanup continues in earnest across the city. Following a powerful snowstorm that delivered up to 30 cm of heavy snow in some neighbourhoods—accompanied by strong winds and major drifting—the City of Thunder Bay remains in full response mode.
While the worst may be over for now, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect, which could influence snow removal efforts in the coming days if more snow develops.
Roadway Snow Removal Underway
Plow crews hit the streets early, with operations beginning at 2:00 a.m. today. Arterial roads, collector routes, and transit corridors have all been cleared once, with additional passes ongoing to manage accumulated drifts and snowpack. Residential street plowing is now underway and is expected to be completed by Saturday, weather permitting.
Sidewalks and Trails Getting Attention
Sidewalk clearing began at 3:00 a.m. with a focus on priority pedestrian routes. Crews are making steady progress, and once these areas are completed, work will begin on residential sidewalks and trails. Please be cautious around equipment and give crews space to work safely.
Sanding and Salting Continue
City crews were active throughout the storm, applying sand and salt to improve traction and road safety. These efforts will continue throughout the week as needed, with a focus on high-traffic intersections, hills, and areas prone to icing.
Residents are asked to be patient as the city works through the backlog caused by the storm. Motorists and pedestrians alike should continue to use caution and give themselves extra time when traveling.
