(Thunder Bay, ON) – March turned out to be a truly lucky month for Gerta Jordaan and her husband Johan of Matheson, whose $50.00 ticket package struck gold, winning an incredible $2,263,732 in the March 50/50.
When Health Sciences Foundation CEO Glenn Craig made the highly anticipated 11:00 A.M. call, the couple had no idea what was about to happen.
“I’m glad I got ahold of you because I have some really good news for you,” Craig said. I needed to speak to Gerta today to let her know she is a multi-millionaire.”
Johan joked, “Well, I guess we can have a good party tonight and if there’s anything left, maybe we can pay off the bills!”
When asked what this win means for their future, Johan, who works at a mine, replied, “Maybe retirement, at least maybe earlier.”
As for why they chose to buy tickets for the Thunder Bay 50/50, Gerta summed it up in one sentence: “For this day.” Johan added, “Everybody talks about it at work. It’s so well known, and everybody I know buys tickets.”
