Heavy Snow Rolls In Tonight Across the Lakehead

THUNDER BAY – It’s time to dig out those snow shovels and prep the slow cooker—Thunder Bay is under a Snowfall Warning, and Mother Nature is coming in strong. Environment Canada is forecasting total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 cm, starting this evening and stretching through to Friday night. That’s a whole lot of snowballs.

Why the Snow?

Why is Thunder Bay getting socked with so much snow right now? It’s all thanks to a low-pressure system making its way across Northwestern Ontario, dragging moisture from the south and meeting Arctic air over Lake Superior—classic snowstorm recipe.

Current Conditions & Forecast: March 27, 2025

As of 3:00 PM EDT today, the current temperature in Thunder Bay sits at -5°C, with winds blowing from the east at 26 km/h and gusts making things feel extra brisk. Humidity is high at 85%, and barometric pressure is holding steady at 101.1 kPa.

This evening, snow will start near the Manitoba border and spread eastward overnight, landing squarely over Lake Superior—including our city. Snowfall will intensify overnight and through Friday, leading to potential travel chaos. Expect snow-covered roads, poor visibility, and potentially even some freezing rain or ice pellets near the Minnesota border, which may knock snow totals down in those southern spots. Snow is expected to taper off by Friday night, with improving conditions into Saturday.

Looking Ahead to Friday

Expect daytime highs around -1°C on Friday, but it’ll feel chillier thanks to the wind and ongoing snow. Snow may mix with ice pellets in some areas, so tread carefully. By Friday night, things start calming down, but don’t be surprised if cleanup efforts last into the weekend.

Historic Weather Trivia for March 27

Thunder Bay’s warmest March 27 on record reached a balmy 13.2°C in 1986, while the chilliest dipped down to a frosty -26.7°C in 1951. Today, we’re clearly siding with the snowier end of the spectrum.
