Geraldton & Greenstone: Snowflakes Today, Sunshine (Eventually) on the Horizon

GERALDTON, ON – March 27, 2025 – While spring is technically here, the Greenstone region clearly didn’t get the memo. Residents of Geraldton and surrounding communities are waking up to light snow, a biting wind, and some classic Northern Ontario chill. While things won’t get dramatically worse this weekend, don’t expect a dramatic thaw either — snow, flurries, and frigid nights remain in the cards right through Monday.

Today’s Forecast – Snowy Start with Some Afternoon Calm

As of 5:25 AM at Geraldton Airport, it’s currently -6.0°C, with a wind chill of -11. Winds are blowing from the north at 11 km/h, and visibility is limited to 11 km due to light snow still falling. The humidity is high at 89%, and the barometric pressure is sitting at 101.6 kPa, stable for now.

Expect flurries to taper off this morning, leaving behind cloudy skies and a 40% chance of flurries throughout the day. Local blowing snow could still make for a tricky commute early this morning, and about 2 cm of fresh snow is likely before things settle down. Winds will shift from the northwest at 30 km/h, gusting to 50, but will ease up early this afternoon.

The temperature will dip to -10°C this morning before nudging upward again later in the day. Don’t let that fool you, though — the wind chill will make it feel more like -20°C early on and -8°C this afternoon. UV index? A modest 3 — enough for a little glare off the snow but not quite sunglasses-required weather.

Friday Through Monday – Snowy Days, Bitterly Cold Nights

Friday will bring periods of snow, with 5 cm of accumulation expected. Winds will pick up again from the northeast at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 by morning. The high for the day reaches -3°C, with a wind chill of -18°C in the morning and -9°C in the afternoon. Bundle up like it’s mid-February.

Friday night continues the snowy trend, with a 60% chance of more snow and temperatures sinking to -14°C.

Saturday brings a slight reprieve — or at least a break in the snowfall. Expect a mix of sun and cloud, with a 40% chance of flurries and a high near -5°C. The evening sees cloudy periods with a 30% chance of flurries, and a low of -17°C.

Sunday shines bright with sunny skies and a high of -4°C, while clear conditions persist Sunday night, though it will be bone-chillingly cold at -22°C. Monday stays sunny with a high of -5°C, and Monday night will remain clear and cold at -20°C.

Wardrobe Wisdom – Layers and Windproof Everything

This weekend in Geraldton calls for winter gear in full force. If you’re heading out, opt for thermal layers, a windproof parka, gloves, a scarf, and boots that mean business. With wind chills dipping into the -20s, especially in the mornings and overnight, this is not the weekend to switch to spring jackets — no matter how hopeful you’re feeling.

Road conditions may become slippery with blowing snow and periods of accumulation, so take it slow if you’re driving, and be sure your vehicle’s winter tires are still firmly in place.

Weather History and Frosty Geraldton Facts

On this date, Geraldton has seen quite the range. The record high was a relatively pleasant 12.4°C set in 1986, while the record low fell to a bone-cracking -32.8°C back in 1982. Today’s chill feels somewhere in between — but definitely leaning toward “nose-freezing.”

Did you know? Geraldton, located right along Highway 11, frequently experiences some of the coldest overnight temperatures in Ontario during late March. It’s thanks to clear skies and dry Arctic air sliding in behind weather systems — perfect conditions for radiational cooling and waking up to frozen nostrils.
