Sault Ste. Marie Braces for a Slushy Spring Surprise Under a Winter Weather Advisory

Current Conditions as of 5:00 AM – Monday, March 24, 2025

Just when you thought spring might finally be knocking on the door, Sault Ste. Marie has other plans. A winter weather travel advisory remains in effect this morning as snow continues to fall across the region. At the Sault Ste. Marie Airport, it’s currently -2.8°C with light snow and drifting snow reported. Visibility is holding at 19 km for now, but don’t be fooled—patches of heavier snow may cause sudden whiteout conditions. Winds from the east-northeast are sweeping through at 23 km/h, gusting up to 34, giving us a brisk wind chill of -9. Barometric pressure sits at 99.7 kPa and is on a downward trend, signaling that today’s snowy scene is far from finished.

While the snow has already made its presence felt, expect 2 to 4 more centimetres today, with total snowfall reaching 10 to 15 cm before tapering off by evening. Winds will shift northwest later this morning at 20 km/h, with gusts up to 40 km/h, and the temperature is expected to climb just above freezing to a high of +1°C. The UV index remains a low 1 — barely a glimmer of sunshine through the thick cloud.

Tonight: Light Snow Lingers, Temperatures Dip

Overnight, periods of light snow continue, accompanied by continued northwest winds gusting up to 40 km/h before calming later in the evening. The mercury will drop to -6°C, and wind chills will hover around -11, making for another nippy night. If you’re planning to be out, layer up — and maybe keep that snowbrush handy for tomorrow’s commute.

Tuesday Through Thursday: A Slow Melt Begins?

Tuesday brings more periods of snow, though on the lighter side — with around 2 cm expected. Northwest winds return in the afternoon at 20 km/h, and the high will top out at a chilly -1°C. Wind chills will stay close to -8, so don’t let your guard — or your mittens — down just yet. Tuesday night clears somewhat, with a low of -10°C.

Wednesday offers a brief break with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of +2°C. Flurries may make a minor comeback Wednesday night with a 30% chance under cloudy skies and a low of -5°C. Thursday features more unsettled conditions with a 60% chance of rain showers or flurries, a high of +2°C, and a repeat of those colder night temperatures with a low of -10°C.

Historic Weather on March 24 in the Sault

Looking back through the snow-globe of time, the warmest March 24 on record for Sault Ste. Marie hit a springy 15.7°C back in 1910, while the coldest dropped all the way to -28.9°C in 1974. Today’s forecast sits in the wintry middle — cold, but by local standards, nothing we can’t handle with a sturdy shovel and a good pair of boots.

What to Wear: Full Winter Mode Engaged

It’s a day for snow pants, insulated boots, thermal everything, and a coat that laughs in the face of blowing snow. If you’re commuting or even just walking the dog, consider goggles optional but helpful. Bonus points for hand warmers and waterproof mittens — your fingers will thank you.

Sault Ste. Marie Weather Trivia

Here’s a fun flake of history: thanks to its location at the eastern tip of Lake Superior, Sault Ste. Marie gets walloped by lake-effect snow every winter — averaging around 320 cm per season. That’s taller than a professional basketball player… if you stacked all that snow up at once. Who needs mountains?
