Snowstorm Poised to Impact Travel in Northwestern Ontario

Fort Frances, Emo, Rainy River and Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation Prepare for 10 to 15 cm of Snow

Get those shovels and snow brushes ready—winter’s not done with Fort Frances and the surrounding region just yet! A Winter Weather Travel Advisory has been issued by Environment Canada for Sunday, with 10 to 15 cm of snow expected. Some areas might even see more than 15 cm, especially if heavier snow bands set up shop overhead.

The snow is set to begin Sunday morning, making for a slushy and slick day from Fort Frances through Emo, Rainy River, and Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation. The snow will fall steadily through the day and taper off Sunday night into early Monday morning. Visibility could be sharply reduced during the heaviest snowfall, so motorists are urged to adjust travel plans and drive with caution.

Thunder Bay is under a Winter Storm Warning with up to 25cm of snow expected.

As of Saturday evening, the weather is calm but brisk in Fort Frances, with a temperature of -3°C, light winds out of the northwest at 13 km/h, and a relative humidity of 69%. The barometric pressure sits at 101.4 kPa, indicating a weather system on the approach.

On this day in history, Fort Frances has seen a record high of 12.8°C, and a record low of -29.5°C. Today’s chill leans toward the frosty end of the spectrum, but this upcoming snowstorm is the real attention-grabber.

Dress Code for a Snow Day:

If you’re heading out Sunday, think snow-proof. Bundle up with a wind-resistant coat, lined gloves, insulated boots, and maybe even a face cover if you’re trekking through blowing snow. You’ll want to stay dry and visible—bright colours are a plus when visibility drops!

Weather Trivia:

Fort Frances once held the record for the warmest March day in Northwestern Ontario at 23.3°C—but not this weekend! Keep dreaming of spring, but maybe hold off on swapping the snow tires just yet.
