Blustery Morning, Frigid Wind Chills, and a Late-Day Clearing

Sault Ste. Marie is off to a blustery and chilly start this morning, with the temperature at -1.8°C, but don’t let that fool you—it feels much colder.

Thanks to powerful northwest winds gusting up to a staggering 73 km/h, the wind chill has plunged to -11°C. While there is not a wind warning or advisory in effect this morning, the weather begs to the difference.

Humidity is sitting at 85%, and the barometric pressure is at 100.0 kPa and rising, signalling some clearing ahead.

Visibility remains strong at 24 km, but with a 30% chance of early-morning flurries, a brief snow shower could blur the view.

As the day progresses, skies will gradually clear, but the wind remains a dominant force. Northwest winds of 40 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, will keep things feeling much colder than the forecasted high of -5°C.

The wind chill will hover near -17°C, so don’t be deceived by the improving sky conditions—the cold is here to stay a bit longer. The UV index is at a moderate 4, so if you’re braving the outdoors, some sun protection isn’t a bad idea.

Tonight, partly cloudy skies take over, and the wind will finally ease, dropping to 30 km/h before becoming light late this evening. The overnight low will sink to -10°C, with a wind chill of -17°C, making it another bone-chilling night.

Midweek: A Slow Warm-Up Begins

Wednesday will be mainly cloudy, with a light east wind picking up to 20 km/h by late morning. While the high will reach 0°C, the real concern is the morning wind chill, which will make it feel like -17°C.

By the afternoon, things will feel a little more tolerable at -4°C. The UV index remains at 4, still in the moderate range.

Wednesday night looks much calmer, with clear skies and a low of -4°C—positively balmy compared to the past couple of nights!

By Thursday, we see a noticeable shift towards spring, with a mix of sun and clouds and a much milder high of 7°C.

The night brings increasing clouds and a 30% chance of showers, with the low sitting at a much more comfortable +2°C.

Looking Ahead: Spring-Like Temperatures, but Some Showers

Friday keeps the warming trend going, with a mix of sun and clouds and a 40% chance of showers. The high will reach 9°C, making it feel like winter is finally loosening its grip. The night remains cloudy, with a continued 40% chance of showers and an unseasonably warm low of 8°C.

What to Wear?

Today and tonight are all about bundling up. The wind chill near -17°C means you’ll need a heavy winter coat, gloves, a hat, and maybe even a scarf to block those biting gusts. By Wednesday, layers will still be necessary, especially in the morning, but as temperatures warm through the week, you can start to shed some of that winter gear. By Thursday and Friday, lighter jackets and rain-resistant clothing will be more practical as we shift toward milder, wetter conditions.

Sault Ste. Marie Weather Trivia: A March Windstorm to Remember

March is no stranger to wild weather in Sault Ste. Marie. Back in March 1973, the city was hit by a powerful winter storm that brought howling winds, heavy snow, and whiteout conditions, reminding residents just how unpredictable this month can be. Today’s gusts aren’t quite that extreme, but they’re certainly packing a punch!
