Snowfall Warning in Effect for Red Lake, Ear Falls, Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout and Eastern Lac Seul and Armstrong

If you thought winter was winding down, Mother Nature has other plans! A Snowfall Warning has been issued for Sioux Lookout and Eastern Lac Seul, with 15 to 20 cm of fresh snow expected on Monday. Travelers along Highway 105, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Pickle Lake, and Armstrong should brace for challenging conditions as this system moves through.

What to Expect: Snow, Snow, and More Snow!

The snow is set to begin early Monday morning, ramping up as the day progresses. At its peak, expect snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour, which means visibility could drop significantly in heavy bursts. The good news? The system is expected to taper off by Monday evening.

Those commuting or traveling should prepare for sudden whiteout conditions and slippery roads, as the accumulating snow will make driving hazardous. If you’re on the road, take it slow, keep a safe distance, and be ready for unexpected stops!

Current Conditions in Red Lake and Surrounding Areas

Right now, temperatures are hovering around the seasonal mark, but with this incoming system, expect things to feel even chillier. Winds are currently light to moderate, but as the snow system moves in, gusty conditions could contribute to blowing snow.

For reference, the historic high for this date in Red Lake was 10.5°C, while the record low plummeted to -35.2°C—so while this storm isn’t breaking any extreme temperature records, it’s certainly making its mark with snowfall.

Barometric pressure is on a downward trend, signaling that this system is approaching. Humidity levels are high, meaning the snow will likely be on the heavier side—great for snowball fights, not so great for shoveling!

How to Prepare: Stay Warm and Stay Safe!

Wardrobe Essentials:

  • Layer up! A warm winter coat, thermal socks, and insulated boots are a must.
  • Gloves, scarves, and hats are your best friends in these snowy conditions.
  • If driving, pack an emergency kit with blankets, snacks, and a flashlight in case of delays.

Travel Advisory:

  • If possible, delay non-essential travel until conditions improve Monday evening.
  • If you must be on the road, drive cautiously and keep extra space between vehicles.
  • Watch for snowplows—they’re your best allies in keeping the roads clear!

Did You Know?

Sioux Lookout is known as the “Hub of the North” due to its role as a key transportation and aviation center. But did you know that back in March 1966, parts of northwestern Ontario saw a record-breaking snowfall of 45 cm in a single day? Thankfully, Monday’s system won’t be quite that extreme—but it’ll still be enough to remind us that winter isn’t done with us yet!
