Former Bank of Canada Governor Wins Landslide Victory in Leadership Race
OTTAWA – Mark Carney has been overwhelmingly elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, securing a decisive 85.9% of the vote in the party’s leadership race. The former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England will soon be sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister.
Carney’s Historic Win
Carney, who has never held elected office, easily defeated his challengers:
- Chrystia Freeland – 8%
- Karina Gould – 3.2%
- Frank Baylis – 3%
Despite lacking a seat in the House of Commons, Carney’s leadership marks a new chapter for the Liberal Party following the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Minister Patty Hajdu, reflecting on his tenure:
“From historic climate action to advancing reconciliation, from $10-a-day child care to ensuring dental care for millions, from strengthening the middle class to leading Canada through a global pandemic—these are just a few ways Justin Trudeau’s leadership has shaped Canada over the past decade. His impact will be felt for years to come.”
Premier Doug Ford Responds to Carney’s Election
Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a statement congratulating Carney while outlining key provincial priorities:
“Your election comes at a critical time as our country faces the ongoing threat of President Trump’s tariffs. Now more than ever, Canada needs strong leadership and cooperation across all levels of government to protect our economy.”
Ford emphasized the need for federal support in unlocking critical minerals in Northern Ontario, particularly in the Ring of Fire region. He also called for the removal of the federal carbon tax, describing it as an “expensive, job-killing tax.”
Despite past political differences, Ford thanked Trudeau for his service, particularly in securing $46 billion in electric vehicle and battery investments for Ontario.
What’s Next for Carney?
Carney’s leadership brings a fresh perspective to the Liberal Party as he prepares to form government and transition into the role of prime minister. His economic expertise and international experience will shape Canada’s approach to key issues, including trade, climate policy, and economic development.
As Canada enters a new political era, all eyes will be on how Carney navigates leadership without a seat in Parliament—and how his policies will impact Ontario and the rest of the country.
