Special Weather Statement in Effect

Toronto faces heavy rain, possible thunderstorms, and flooding today, followed by snow, strong winds, and icy conditions tonight. Stay prepared for changing weather!

Toronto is in for a wild ride today, with a messy mix of rain, rapidly falling temperatures, strong winds, and even some snow on the way. A special weather statement remains in effect, warning of rainfall amounts between 15 and 25 mm, with localized flooding possible due to melting snow and frozen ground.

Adding to the chaos, temperatures will plunge tonight, causing roads and sidewalks to become icy and hazardous. Strong westerly to northwesterly winds gusting up to 80 km/h could cause further disruptions, so hold on to your hats (literally).

Current Conditions (6:33 AM EST, March 5, 2025)

At Toronto Pearson International Airport, it’s currently 3°C with rain falling steadily. The humidity is sitting at a saturated 100%, and the barometric pressure is at 100.1 kPa and falling, signaling an active weather system.

Winds are out of the east-southeast at 9 km/h, but they will pick up significantly later. Visibility remains decent at 8 km, but that could quickly change as fog patches develop this morning.

Today’s Forecast: Wet & Windy with a Risk of Thunderstorms

Expect periods of rain or drizzle throughout the day, with a risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Fog patches will develop this morning, further reducing visibility. Rainfall amounts could reach 10 to 20 mm, and with mild temperatures peaking at 7°C, the melting snow may cause water pooling on roads and low-lying areas.

Winds will start from the east at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, before easing later in the day.

Tonight: Rain Transitions to Snow & Temperatures Drop

If you’re heading out this evening, prepare for a messy mix of rain showers, drizzle, and periods of snow overnight. There’s still a risk of thunderstorms early in the evening, and fog patches will stick around before dissipating in the morning.

Winds will shift to the southwest at 20 km/h after midnight, and the temperature will drop to 1°C.

Thursday, March 6: Snow, Strong Winds & Falling Temperatures

Winter isn’t ready to let go just yet! Expect snow, at times mixed with rain early in the morning, before transitioning to local blowing snow by late morning and into the afternoon. Accumulations of 2 to 4 cm of snow are possible.

The winds will intensify, shifting to the northwest at 30 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h, making it feel even colder. By the afternoon, temperatures will plummet to -2°C, with a wind chill of -9°C.

Thursday Night: Skies will finally start to clear, but temperatures will dip to -5°C, so bundle up!

Friday, March 7: A Break from the Chaos

Friday looks much calmer, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 3°C—a welcome break after all the turbulence. However, the night could bring cloudy periods with a 30% chance of flurries, with temperatures dropping to -6°C.

What to Wear?

Today, go for waterproof everything—a rain jacket, boots, and an umbrella (though be warned, strong winds might try to snatch it away). By tonight and tomorrow, winter gear is back in style, with a warm coat, gloves, and a hat needed to fight off the wind chill.

Weather Trivia: Toronto’s Wildest March Storm

Did you know that on March 12, 1993, Toronto was hit by a record-breaking blizzard that dumped over 30 cm of snow and brought wind gusts of up to 100 km/h?

This storm, known as the “Storm of the Century,” impacted the entire eastern seaboard of North America!

Final Thoughts

Toronto is in for a weather rollercoaster over the next 24 hours. With rain, possible thunderstorms, a sudden temperature drop, snow, and strong winds, travel conditions could become hazardous—so stay alert and drive carefully. Power outages are possible with the strong gusts, so keep your devices charged just in case. Stay safe and dry, Toronto!
