Excessive speed leads to serious penalties, including licence suspension and vehicle impoundment
Thunder Bay driver charged with stunt driving after speeding 93 km/h in a 50 zone. Licence suspended, car impounded
THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay driver is facing stunt driving charges after being caught speeding nearly double the limit.
On March 3, 2025, at 5 p.m., a Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) traffic unit officer was conducting Lidar speed enforcement training with members of the Primary Response Branch. During the exercise, officers stopped a Honda Civic on Golf Links Road near Cascade Crescent, clocked at 93 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
The female driver was charged with speeding and stunt driving, an offence under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act that applies when a driver exceeds the speed limit by 40 km/h or more in a zone under 80 km/h (or by 50 km/h on highways with limits over 80 km/h). Stunt driving also includes reckless maneuvers such as racing, drifting, or intentional loss of traction.
As a result of the charge, the driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 30 days, and her vehicle was impounded for 14 days. She is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in May.
