THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire & Rescue (TBFR) swiftly responded to a structural fire on McTavish Street late Saturday morning, March 1, 2025.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a house fire, prompting a second-alarm response before crews arrived on the scene.

Heavy Smoke and Flames on Arrival

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames at the rear of the residence. The first-arriving pumper crew initially attacked the fire from the exterior before transitioning to an interior fire suppression operation.

Quick Action Prevents Further Spread

Thanks to the rapid and coordinated response, crews successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading into the attic. However, the home sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage.

Safety Measures Taken for Neighbouring Homes

Firefighters searched the residence thoroughly, confirming that no one was inside. Nearby homes were also checked for air quality safety, with one residence being temporarily evacuated due to elevated carbon monoxide levels. The home was ventilated before its occupants were allowed to return.

No Injuries Reported

Thankfully, no injuries were sustained by either civilians or firefighters.

Massive Response Effort

A total of six pumper trucks, one aerial ladder truck, and one command unit were deployed to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
