Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Responds to Serious Assault; Victim Transported to Thunder Bay for Care

A male suspect has been arrested in an aggravated assault case in North Spirit Lake First Nation. Investigation ongoing

NORTH SPIRIT LAKE, ON – A male suspect has been arrested in connection with an aggravated assault investigation in North Spirit Lake First Nation.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) officers from the North Spirit Lake detachment responded to a call on the evening of Thursday, February 13, regarding an assault. The victim was receiving medical care at the North Spirit Lake clinic before being transported to Thunder Bay for further treatment due to the severity of their injuries.

Although serious, the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Following an investigation, police identified and arrested Joseph Scott James Kakegamic, 28, of North Spirit Lake First Nation, on Tuesday, February 18. He has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault

Kakegamic appeared for a bail hearing on Wednesday, February 19, and was released with conditions pending a future court date.
