Winter Weather Update

Frigid Start with Drifting Snow

Sudbury faces extreme cold with wind chills near -32°C. Flurries, gusty winds, and frostbite risks continue into midweek. Stay warm and bundle up!

Sudbury is waking up to a teeth-chattering -22°C, with drifting snow and a wind chill that makes it feel like a brutal -32°C. The pressure sits at 101.1 kPa and is on the rise, signaling some stability in the atmosphere—but don’t expect much warmth. Humidity is at 71%, and northwest winds at 18 km/h will only strengthen as the morning goes on. Visibility is holding at 24 km, but blowing snow could reduce it at times.

Today, expect a mix of sun and clouds with a 30% chance of flurries this morning and early afternoon. The high will reach only -15°C, but with the wind gusting up to 40 km/h, it will feel closer to -32°C in the morning and -24°C in the afternoon. The risk of frostbite is high, so bundle up and limit skin exposure. The UV index remains low at 2.

Tonight: Bitterly Cold with Strong Winds

Partly cloudy skies will dominate the evening, but the bitter cold will steal the show. Winds will persist from the northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h. Temperatures drop to -21°C, but wind chills will push it to a painful -26°C in the evening and a bone-numbing -31°C overnight. Frostbite can set in within minutes under these conditions, so take extra precautions if heading outside.

Tuesday & Wednesday: More Cold and Flurries

Tuesday brings mainly cloudy skies with a 60% chance of flurries developing late in the morning and continuing through the afternoon. The high will reach -16°C, but with morning wind chills near -32°C and afternoon wind chills around -25°C, it won’t feel much better. The risk of frostbite remains high. Overnight, temperatures plummet to -23°C with a 30% chance of more flurries.

Wednesday remains cloudy with a continued 30% chance of flurries, but temperatures will “warm” slightly to -10°C. By nighttime, expect cloudy periods and a low of -19°C.

What to Wear?

This is not a day for fashion—it’s about survival! A thermal base layer, an insulated winter coat, and thick, waterproof gloves are mandatory. A toque and scarf to cover exposed skin are essential, as frostbite can develop quickly in these temperatures. If you have to be outside, consider thermal socks and heavy-duty winter boots to protect your feet from the biting cold.

Sudbury Weather Trivia: Did You Know?

Sudbury’s coldest recorded temperature was a staggering -41.1°C on February 4, 1912! While today’s -22°C might feel harsh, it’s nowhere near that historic deep freeze.
