Frigid Temperatures with Frostbite Risks – Stay Bundled Up!

Dryden & Vermilion Bay remain locked in a deep freeze, with wind chills of -36°C. Bitter cold persists through the week with frostbite risks. Stay warm!

It’s another brutally cold morning in Dryden and Vermilion Bay, with the temperature sitting at -26°C at the Dryden Airport. A west-southwest wind at 13 km/h is making it feel much worse, driving the wind chill down to -36°C. The humidity is 75%, and visibility remains solid at 16 km despite the cloudy skies. The barometric pressure is 103.0 kPa and holding steady. If you’re heading outside, even for a few minutes, cover up completely—frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes in these conditions.

Today’s Forecast: Cold, but Some Sunshine on the Way

Expect a mix of sun and cloud with a 30% chance of flurries this morning, but by the afternoon, the skies will clear, bringing sunshine—though not warmth. Winds will remain light, reaching up to 15 km/h, but the high will only climb to -20°C. The wind chill will be -34°C this morning, improving slightly to -27°C this afternoon. With a UV index of 1, sunburn isn’t a worry, but frostbite absolutely is.

Tonight: A Bone-Chilling Overnight Low

Skies will remain clear, but temperatures will plummet to -29°C. Winds will stay light at up to 15 km/h, but even a breeze at these temperatures is enough to make a difference. The wind chill will be -30°C this evening, dropping further to -36°C overnight—once again, frostbite will be a serious concern.

Midweek Outlook: More Cold, More Sun

Wednesday, February 12 – Another Bitterly Cold Day

Wednesday morning will start mainly sunny, but don’t expect much warmth. The high will reach only -18°C, with a morning wind chill of -34°C and -22°C in the afternoon. Winds will remain light at 15 km/h, but frostbite remains a risk throughout the day.

By Wednesday night, skies will stay clear, and the temperature will once again take a nosedive to -30°C.

Thursday, February 13 – A Slightly “Warmer” Day

Thursday will bring a mix of sun and clouds, with a high of -18°C. It’s still very cold, but at least the sun will help.

Thursday night, cloud cover increases, with a low of -26°C.

Friday, February 14 – Cloudy but a Tiny Warm-Up

Friday remains cloudy, with a high of -14°C—which, at this point, might actually feel mild! Overnight, cloudy periods will persist, with the temperature dropping to -27°C.

What to Wear: Full Winter Battle Gear

With wind chills near -36°C, every layer counts:

  • Thermal base layers to trap body heat
  • A thick insulated winter coat—this is no time for a light jacket
  • Heavy mittens (not gloves!) for better warmth
  • A toque, scarf, and face covering—exposed skin is at serious frostbite risk
  • Insulated boots to protect against the bitter cold

If you have outdoor plans, take breaks indoors frequently to warm up.

Dryden Weather Trivia: Just How Cold Can It Get?

The coldest February temperature on record for Dryden was a jaw-dropping -46.7°C on February 15, 1939. While today isn’t quite that extreme, the dangerous wind chills make it feel just as brutal.

Stay warm, stay safe, and if you don’t have to go outside—today’s the perfect day for staying in with a hot drink!
