Frosty Morning with Sunshine on the Way

Thunder Bay sees clearing skies but remains bitterly cold with wind chills near -28°C. Flurries return tonight and Monday. Frostbite risk is high—bundle up!

Thunder Bay residents are waking up to a cloudy and cold morning this Sunday, February 9, 2025, with temperatures sitting at -17.9°C at Thunder Bay Airport. If that wasn’t chilly enough, a west wind at 8 km/h is making it feel like -24°C with the wind chill.

The barometric pressure is at 102.6 kPa and rising, which means drier air is moving in, signalling clearing skies ahead. Humidity sits at 69%, so at least it’s not too damp.

Visibility is excellent at 24 km, but let’s be honest—nobody’s rushing outside for a scenic walk in these temperatures.

Sunday Forecast: Sunshine Peeks Through, But the Cold Stays

While it’s a cloudy start, expect skies to clear this morning, making way for some welcome (but deceiving) sunshine. Winds will pick up from the northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, before calming down late this afternoon.

Even though the temperature will climb to -10°C, the wind chill will make it feel like -28°C this morning and -15°C this afternoon. The risk of frostbite is high, so any outdoor plans should come with multiple layers and minimal skin exposure.

Tonight: A Cold and Breezy Overnight

The evening will start out clear, but partly cloudy skies will return overnight, bringing a 30% chance of flurries after midnight. Winds will pick up again from the northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, pushing the overnight low to -20°C.

Factor in the wind chill, and it will feel like -16°C this evening, dropping to a brutal -28°C overnight. Frostbite can occur in minutes at these temperatures, so bundle up accordingly.

Monday: Flurries & a Bitter Chill Continue

Monday starts with a mix of sun and cloud, but don’t expect a completely dry day—there’s a 30% chance of flurries in the morning, increasing to a 70% chance in the afternoon.

Winds will pick up again from the west at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, and temperatures will reach a high of -13°C. However, with the morning wind chill plunging to -27°C and the afternoon wind chill near -21°C, it will feel dangerously cold all day. The UV index remains low at 1, so while sunglasses might not be necessary, winter gear certainly is.

Monday night remains cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries, as temperatures take a nosedive to -29°C.

Tuesday & Beyond: A Sunny but Deep Freeze

Tuesday will bring a much-needed dose of sunshine, but the high will only reach -17°C. Tuesday night stays clear and brutally cold, with the mercury plunging to -26°C. If you’re wondering when the warm-up is coming—well, it’s not this week.

What to Wear Today

With a wind chill of -28°C this morning and -15°C this afternoon, serious winter attire is mandatory. A heavy insulated parka, snow pants, warm gloves, a hat, and a scarf are non-negotiable if you’re spending any time outdoors. If you’re out late tonight, dress even warmer—wind chills near -28°C overnight can cause frostbite in minutes.

Thunder Bay Weather Trivia: A City of Extremes

Did you know Thunder Bay holds the record for Ontario’s coldest-ever wind chill? On January 10, 1982, the city faced a wind chill of -58°C—enough to make today’s temperatures feel downright tropical in comparison. Keep that in mind the next time you’re tempted to complain about -28°C!
