Frigid Temperatures and Gusty Winds to Start the Day

Thunder Bay faces frigid wind chills of -30°C today, followed by snow midweek. Bundle up—frostbite risk is high, and accumulating snowfall is on the way

Thunder Bay is waking up to an icy -20°C this morning, with mainly clear skies. The wind, however, is making sure it doesn’t feel that way—blowing from the west at 14 km/h, it’s dropping the wind chill to a biting -29°C. The humidity sits at 64%, and barometric pressure is on the rise at 103.3 kPa.

The early morning brings a 30% chance of flurries, but skies will clear as the day progresses. Winds will pick up, shifting to the northwest at 20 km/h and gusting to 40 km/h, keeping the cold locked in place. The high for the day will reach -12°C, but with wind chills sitting at -30°C this morning and -20°C this afternoon, it won’t feel any warmer. The risk of frostbite remains high, so make sure to bundle up before heading outdoors.

Tonight: Cold, Clear, and Brutal Wind Chills

Tonight, the sky will remain mostly clear with just a few clouds drifting in. The northwest wind will ease up early in the evening, becoming light, but that won’t stop the temperatures from plummeting to -22°C. Wind chills will make it feel like -20°C in the evening and an icy -29°C overnight. Frostbite can occur within minutes in these conditions, so limit time outside unless you’re dressed for the Arctic.

Wednesday: Sunshine in the Morning, Clouds and Snow by Night

Wednesday morning will bring a brief glimmer of sunshine before clouds start rolling in around noon. Winds will remain light at up to 15 km/h, but that won’t help much when wind chills start the day at a painful -29°C. The afternoon will bring slightly warmer temperatures, reaching a high of -9°C, but it will still feel like -13°C.

By nightfall, the clouds will thicken, and periods of snow will begin, bringing a low of -10°C. If you have travel plans in the evening, be prepared for accumulating snowfall.

Thursday: Snowy and Slightly Warmer

Thursday continues the snowy trend, with periods of snow expected throughout the day. The high will reach -7°C—practically balmy compared to earlier in the week. Snow will taper off in the evening, leaving behind cloudy periods and a 40% chance of flurries. The overnight low will dip to -16°C, keeping the cold firmly in place.

Historic Thunder Bay Weather for February 4

Thunder Bay has seen some dramatic temperature swings on this date in history. The warmest February 4 recorded a relatively mild 6.3°C, while the coldest plunged to a mind-numbing -41.7°C. While today’s deep freeze is rough, it could definitely be worse!

Wardrobe Wisdom: Full Arctic Gear Required

With wind chills plunging into the -30s, dressing properly is a necessity. A heavy parka, thermal layers, thick mittens, and a face covering are essential to avoiding frostbite. If you’re heading out Wednesday night or Thursday, snow boots and waterproof gear will come in handy as the flakes start falling.

Did You Know? Thunder Bay’s Infamous Snowfall Record

Thunder Bay might be cold, but it can also be extremely snowy. One of the heaviest single-day snowfalls recorded was on December 11, 2008, when the city was buried under 40 cm of snow in just 24 hours. That’s enough to make anyone reconsider their winter travel plans!
