Brace for a Snowy and Windy Weekend!

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Nipigon and Rossport, with 15-25 cm of snow expected. Blowing snow and strong winds will make travel dangerous this weekend

Residents of Nipigon and Rossport, get ready to shovel! A Winter Storm Warning is in effect as a strong low-pressure system moves in, bringing 15 to 25 cm of snow by the time the storm passes on Sunday evening.

Some areas along higher terrain and the Lake Superior shoreline could see even higher amounts. Along with the snow, expect reduced visibility and blowing snow, making travel hazardous.

If you’re heading out, prepare for slippery roads, limited visibility, and winter driving conditions. If possible, delay unnecessary travel until after the storm passes.

Current Conditions (7:00 AM EST, Feb 1, 2025)

At Cameron Falls, the temperature is a bone-chilling -25.2°C, with a northeast wind at 2 km/h, making it feel like -27°C. The humidity sits at 78%, and the barometric pressure is 103.4 kPa and rising.

While the wind is calm now, things will change quickly as the storm moves in later today.

Saturday’s Forecast: Increasing Clouds, Flurries Before the Storm

Enjoy the sunshine this morning because by noon, clouds will roll in, setting the stage for the incoming storm. By late afternoon, there’s a 60% chance of flurries ahead of the heavier snowfall. Wind chills will be -30°C this morning, improving slightly to -14°C by afternoon.

With frostbite a risk today, layer up if you’re heading outside. A warm hat, gloves, and thermal layers are a must in these conditions!

Tonight: The Heavy Snow Arrives

By the evening, heavy snow and blowing snow will take over, with 10 to 15 cm of accumulation expected overnight. The southeast wind will increase to 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, making travel even more difficult.

Temperatures will rise to -7°C by morning, but don’t let that fool you—the wind chill will make it feel closer to -17°C. If you must be out, drive carefully and be prepared for quickly changing conditions.

Sunday, February 2: More Snow and Wind

The storm continues Sunday, bringing another 10 cm of snow, accompanied by local blowing snow. The south wind will remain strong at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, creating reduced visibility and tough travel conditions.

The high temperature will rise to -1°C, a welcome break from today’s deep freeze. However, wind chills will still make it feel like -17°C in the morning and -8°C in the afternoon.

By Sunday night, the system will begin to taper off, with cloudy periods and a 60% chance of flurries. The temperature will dip to -14°C, keeping things cold but calmer.

Monday, February 3: A Break from the Storm

Monday brings a mix of sun and cloud with a 30% chance of flurries, with temperatures reaching -10°C. Monday night will see cloudy periods and another 30% chance of flurries, with temperatures plunging to -22°C.

Winter Wardrobe Advisory

With wind chills as low as -30°C this morning and a blustery, snowy night ahead, dressing appropriately is key. Insulated coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and thermal layers are all essential. If you’re shoveling or spending time outdoors, take breaks to avoid overexertion—this is a heavy snow event!

Fun Fact: Nipigon’s Record-Breaking Cold

Did you know that Nipigon holds a chilling record of -51°C, set on January 23, 1935? While today’s cold isn’t quite that extreme, it’s still a reminder that winter in Northwestern Ontario doesn’t mess around!

Stay warm, stay safe, and if you can, enjoy the snowfall from indoors with a cozy blanket and a warm drink!
